Well I was a few days behind in the Sochi Olympics so this post covers last night and tonight’s coverage of the Olympic Games and my thoughts on everything that happened :)
We will start with Tuesday Night….First event I want to talk about is Women’s Luge. Erin Hamlin made history as the first US athlete to win an Olympic medal (bronze by the way) in this event in 50 years (since the event had been introduced into the Olympic Games). I was so excited to see her win the bronze and end the US streak in this event. It was truly AMAZING to watch and of course see the crowds reaction to the Bronze Medal win :) YAY!!
Also on Tuesday Night, I of course have to talk about Shawn White. It was too bad that he did not get a gold medal in men’s halfpipe but even worse that he just missed to podium by getting 4th. I know if that happened to me I would be devastated but he took it like a pro and gave a really neat and clean interview afterwards. I also felt bad for him because he dropped out of another event that he could have gotten a medal in to just concentrate on this event. It hurt a little to see that no US male medaled in this event this Olympic Games. On the other hand, the USA team did FANTASTIC in Women’s halfpipe where we won gold and bronze medal :) It was awesome to watch the women dominate and pull off amazing tricks tonight. GIRL POWER!!!
Lastly for Tuesday Night…SLOPESTYLE FREE SKI EVENT! I could not believe the tricks that both the men and women pulled off on Slopestyle Snowboard but then to do it all again but on skis was unheard of. It was a great event to watch and was really a nail biter. With the women int eh event getting so much air and doing tricks that defied gravity. I have to say that slopestyle is becoming one of my favorite sports at the Winter Olympics. I can’t wait to see the Men’s event because that will sure be suspenseful hahahaha As my parents have both said watching Slopstyle on snowboards and skis….THESE ATHLETES ARE CRAZY!
Tonight I also witnessed history by seeing 2 women tie for gold medals in the women’s downhill. It was AMAZING! To see the last woman coming down the hill and seeing the exact same time on the screen as she rides across the finish line was unbelievable. I’ve heard that there was truly one winner but because of rounding to the nearest tenth…it resulted in a tie. I also heard that the Olympics are not going to release who actually was the winner. I think that is fair because it wouldn’t solve anything and both of those women had an amazing run to earn that gold medal. The looks on their faces when they realized their gold dreams were priceless. Never in the history of a downhill event in the Winter Olympics as any athlete tied for a medal…let alone a gold medal. IT WAS AWESOME!! :)
Lastly, Even though I am cheering on the USA, I can’t miss the opportunity to talk about the triumphant return of pride in Russian figure Skating pairs. Russia won gold and silver medal in the pairs figuring skating event. The pairs that skated look gorgeous in costume and routine. The throws and jumps were death defying and AMAZING to witness. I learned tonight that Russian figure skaters have to take ballet or have ballet in their training…it is a requirement to show grace and poise on the ice. Let me tell you…it showed! Just to see the gold medalists’ faces after they skated the final time, they just knew that they had won the gold even though they had to wait to confirm after the last couples had skated in the event. You can jsut see the pride and joy to accomplish their goals of winning pairs again fro Russia.
I watch the Olympics t witness history but also to see the emotions and reactions to the successes and sometimes disappointments in the Olympics. It makes the countries glow with pride just to have athletes in the Olympic Games but to see them succeed…normal people are living their Olympic dreams through the athletes that are there. I LOVE THE OLYMPICS!
